Muni University to Build World-Class Teaching and Research Hospital

ARUA CITY, Uganda Muni University has announced an ambitious Shs160 billion Teaching and Research Hospital project that is expected to transform healthcare delivery, medical education, and research in Uganda's West Nile region.

The project, which is scheduled to break ground on 10 August 2026, marks another major milestone in the University's strategic growth agenda. The Government of Uganda has already committed Shs30 billion as start-up funding for the first phase of construction, with additional funding expected through future national budget allocations.

Government Commits Shs160 Billion to Transformative Healthcare Project

Since its establishment in 2014, Muni University has grown from an initial enrolment of just 87 students to more than 3,800 students today. The construction of a modern teaching and research hospital represents one of the institution's largest infrastructure investments and reflects its commitment to expanding quality higher education and healthcare services.

According to Vice Chancellor Associate Professor Simon Katrini Anguma, the construction project is expected to take approximately two and a half years, including the installation of specialised medical equipment.

The hospital will not only strengthen practical training for medical students but will also increase access to specialised healthcare services for communities across the West Nile Sub-region and neighbouring areas.

A Vision for Specialised Healthcare Delivery

The proposed 250-bed Teaching and Research Hospital has been designed to become one of Uganda's leading referral and teaching hospitals.

Speaking about the project, Engineer Joel Aita, Chairperson of the University Council, noted that the hospital is expected to reduce Uganda's dependence on overseas medical treatment, which currently costs the country more than US$200 million annually.

The facility will provide specialised healthcare services that are currently limited in many parts of Uganda, allowing patients to receive advanced treatment closer to home while supporting national efforts to improve healthcare accessibility.

Facilities to be Included in the Hospital

The hospital will feature modern medical facilities designed to support patient care, teaching, and research. Planned facilities include:

Biomedical laboratories 

Pathology investigations unit 

Multiple operating theatres, including organ transplant theatres 

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) 

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) 

Eight-bed dialysis unit 

Fertility centre and sperm bank 

Radiology department 

Dentistry section 

Occupational therapy unit 

VIP outpatient clinics 

Mortuary with a cold room capable of preserving up to 100 bodies 

VIP wing with two Presidential Suites 

These facilities will position the hospital among Uganda's most advanced medical institutions.

Supporting Medical Education and Research

The Teaching and Research Hospital will serve as an important training centre for students pursuing health-related programmes at Muni University.

Students will gain practical clinical experience using modern medical equipment while working alongside experienced healthcare professionals and researchers.

The University also plans to recruit highly qualified medical specialists from Uganda and abroad to strengthen teaching, mentorship, clinical practice, and research activities.

The project aligns with Muni University's vision of becoming a centre of excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement.

Strategic Expansion and Growth

The hospital project forms part of Muni University's broader institutional expansion strategy.

The University is currently seeking approximately 700 additional acres of land to facilitate future growth. The planned expansion will accommodate several new academic units, including:

Medical School 

Faculty of Engineering and Technology 

Faculty of Law 

Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management 

Other strategic academic programmes 

Vice Chancellor Anguma also confirmed that the University received an Executive Directive authorising the award of the construction contract to Roko Construction Limited, a move expected to accelerate implementation by reducing procurement timelines.

Transforming Healthcare in West Nile

Once completed, the Teaching and Research Hospital is expected to become a centre of excellence for specialised healthcare, medical research, and professional training.

Beyond improving healthcare services, the project is expected to create employment opportunities, strengthen research capacity, stimulate regional economic development, and position Muni University as a leading institution for medical education in Uganda.
