Muni University, through its Sports Unit under the Office of the Dean of Students, has partnered with the Uganda Olympic Committee to conduct a three-day Sports Administration and Management Training Course for sports administrators, teachers and tutors from Arua City and Arua District.
Hosted at Muni University, the training seeks to strengthen sports governance, improve professional sports management and enhance the capacity of those responsible for identifying, nurturing and managing sporting talent across the West Nile sub-region.
The initiative comes at a time when schools and sports administrators continue to face challenges related to violence during sporting competitions and student unrest.
Growing Concerns Over School Strikes and Sports Violence
The scale of the challenge facing school sports in West Nile has become increasingly evident in recent years.
A survey conducted by Decisive Research and Training Organization Limited involving 632 students from seven secondary schools in Arua City identified factors associated with violence during school sports competitions. The study pointed to the influence of former students, substance use, weak policy enforcement and poor officiating among the factors contributing to violence during games and sports.
The findings complement earlier reports highlighting wider challenges affecting schools in the region. Reports published by Daily Monitor documented waves of student strikes across West Nile, including incidents that resulted in school closures and destruction of property.
Strengthening Sports Management for Positive Youth Development
These challenges have reinforced the need for stronger sports governance, professional administration and effective mentorship of young athletes.
For a region rich in sporting talent, the challenge is not only identifying gifted athletes but also creating an environment where young people can compete safely while embracing discipline, teamwork, respect and sportsmanship.
When properly managed, school sports can help learners build confidence, discover their abilities, develop discipline and establish positive relationships beyond their schools and communities.
Building Capacity for Sports Administrators and Teachers
By bringing together the Uganda Olympic Committee, sports administrators, teachers, tutors and other stakeholders, Muni University is positioning itself as an important regional partner in strengthening sports leadership, nurturing talent and promoting positive youth engagement.

The training is expected to provide a foundation for extending similar capacity-building initiatives to other districts across West Nile, further strengthening Muni University's contribution to community transformation beyond the classroom.
Building Talent Beyond Medals
Speaking during the training, Mr Nicholas Opiyo, a Physical Education lecturer and member of the Muni University Sports Unit, said the initiative was designed to strengthen the capacity of sports tutors and administrators in identifying, nurturing and managing sporting talent.
“We decided to organise this initiative together with the Uganda Olympic Committee to strengthen and build the capacity of sports tutors and administrators,” Mr Opiyo said.
He encouraged athletes not to underestimate their achievements when they fail to win medals, noting that qualifying for major competitions is itself a significant accomplishment.
Promoting Fair Play and Sportsmanship
Mr Joseph Collins Ssemmanda cautioned athletes against match-fixing and urged them to observe the rules and regulations governing sporting competitions.

“Sports should create friendship, teamwork and unity. Losing a game should not create grudges because sport is a philosophy of life aimed at building a better world,” he said.
Dean of Students Calls for Better-Managed School Sports
The Dean of Students at Muni University, Ms Stella Amandru, described the training as timely and important in strengthening the management of sports in schools and communities.
She expressed concern about incidents of strikes and violence witnessed in some schools across West Nile and emphasised the need for stronger guidance and better management of young people through properly organised sporting activities.

She also commended Mr Nicholas Opiyo for mobilising partners and helping bring the training to Arua.
